technology

Is technology really good thing?
I think it can be, but there is also an overboard as well.

I simply mean that people can only handle so much new information at a time.
There can be information overload very easily.

Another problem is that not all people learn the same and this new push for technology to be the way to teach may not be as successful as the trainers are expecting.
I, for one, cannot learn by watching a video, I need printed out information and on hands practice. Yet there is now a push for "instructional videos," so what is a person like me to do?

I think instead of forcing so many to succumb to the "new" way, we should work on finding ways for people to actually get more from a training session and look at the needs of the person needing the information, and try to be the most helpful and not boggle a person down with so much technology that the information is lost or they completely loose interest.

I do not mean to sound condescending about new and upcoming technologies but people need to realize that not everyone is on that bandwagon and that some may not want to be.

So what is the solution? Well...how about a compromise? Offer multiple ways for people to have access to the information, allow for the person to choose which learning method is the best for them. Let the information be availiable for all people, this is the basic and most important thing to do when attempting to teach anything.

This may not of been what the technology blog was suppossed to be about but I am honestly at a frustrating place with much of this technology and the way that people are trying to learn how to use basic computer functions and we, as the library, are sometimes giving them way more than they can handle. The library of all places should be where people can feel comfortable going to get information. The question should really be: What is the best way to help the customer? Not always the most technological way...
